Louis-José Barbançon was born in New Caledonia in 1950. He is a descendant of families from the two colonizations, free and penal. Doctor in history, he has devoted the last 45 years to the study of the Caledonian penal colony. He is the author of a thesis entitled Entre les Chaînes et la terre. L‘évolution de l‘idée de déportation au XIXe siècle en France, aux origines de la colonisation en Nouvelle-Calédonie.
He is an indisputable specialist of the New Caledonian prison.
