A restless little boy crosses paths with a man at the end of his rope. A woman is reunited with her long-lost lover. A musician prepares for a competition with a young prodigy who can’t read a single note. Two teenagers speed off on a motorcycle without helmets. These characters—and many others—seem to have nothing in common, except for one thing: they all belong to the same municipal band. Unnoticed, a shy little girl, destined for a brilliant future, watches them closely. She sees the invisible thread that connects them and understands that fate has momentarily paused their individual dramas. If that thread were to snap, they would all fall—and the music would stop.

In this remarkable polyphonic novel, Agnès Desarthe skillfully weaves and unravels destinies through the power of storytelling.
