In a Mediterranean capital that remains unnamed, the protagonist of the novel has to interview the elusive Camille, in order to write a book. But Camille constantly avoids any discussion and reschedules their appointments. The narrator thus spends most of his time in a seaside swimming pool, the Sporting Club. To pass the time, he watches the ever—transforming city: a messy, anarchic place crushed under a blazing sun, increasingly menacing, as if it were blind to its own past. The wait starts to affect the narrator little by little as he attempts to fill it with encounters and memories… Although its name is never written in Sporting club, the city of Beirut is at the center of this dreamlike novel, enchanting the reader with its charming and old-fashioned atmosphere.

Strong points

Somewhere between dream and reality: the wandering of a young man in Beirut is a reflection on a world going to its end.

A mosaic of colorful details and narrative interstices: a nostalgic atmosphere that can remind of Paolo Sorrentino.
