A striking debut novel about the hospital environment.
Nestled in the Parisian suburbs, among its towers and inhabitants, Jean-Claude has spent his entire career in the surgical department of the Villedeuil hospital. Melancholic and now alone, at least he is still passionate about his work. Laëtitia was born there and now works there as a nurse, but she is struggling with the hash environment of the emergency room. Aimée, a brilliant but lost young woman, is about to start an internship. Driven by unseen bonds, she has decided to do her first placement in Villedeuil. Fabrice, an emergency room doctor, will soon become a father but is trying to escape his personal life.
During the months they spend together, their destinies intertwine. In a hospital that’s at breaking point, they will share joys and failures, distress, and a love for their profession. Despite the difficulties, they persevere until one night, the delicate balance is called into question, throwing their lives into upheaval.
With this poignant debut novel, Claire Vesin lets us hear the vibrant voices of those who make the public hospital work, and who are forever marked by the everyday struggle to provide dignified care.
