When Stéphane inherits a painting by the famous artist Eli Trudel, a forgotten chapter of his family’s history is revealed. With canvasses by Trudel, who Stéphane’s grandparents had protected during the Occupation, now highly prized, the sale of this rediscovered masterpiece offers him and his partner the chance of a new beginning. All Stéphane wants, however, is to give his grandparents the recognition they deserve ... But on his arrival in Jerusalem, where he planned to present the picture to experts, Stéphane is placed in custody: could the painting have been stolen from its creator? What secrets does it conceal? What really happened in the Cévennes, in the winter of 1943, during Trudel and his wife’s desperate escape?

In an investigation which traverses past and present, Benoît Séverac keeps us on the edge of our seats and leads us, alongside Stéphane, in the footsteps of the Jewish painter and the dark secrets of History.
