“Les Singuliers” collection

In nearly fifty years of existence, the “Bouquins” collection has carved out a unique place for itself in the publishing world: combining intellectual rigor with freedom of tone and approach, it tirelessly explores all fields of knowledge and creation, often going against the grain of official trends or institutional biases. The chapter that opens today with the launch of “Les Singuliers” aims to further explore this path of curiosity and audacity. Born out of a desire to shed new light on the exceptional “Bouquins” collection and make it available to a new audience, “Les Singuliers” aims to explore the hundreds of thousands of pages published in “Bouquins,” where countless treasures lie, sometimes forgotten, to retain what has always made it successful: little-known classics, unpublished historical or literary essays, critical apparatus of unparalleled richness…

Among the first titles to be published in October, this Pantagruel offers readers Rabelais in what is undoubtedly the most complete, up-to-date, and comprehensive critical edition. Taken from the volume Tout Rabelais, published in 2022 in the “Bouquins” collection, it presents the text in its original version alongside a translation into contemporary French informed by the latest research. A set of detailed and rigorous notes, while remaining accessible, completes this work, making it an indispensable tool for students but also, more broadly, the ideal gateway for any reader curious to discover this unforgettable celebration of language.

This volume contains: Pantagruel (text introduced, edited, and annotated by Nicolas Le Cadet; translated by Myriam Marrache-Gouraud); Pantagrueline Prognostication (text introduced, edited, translated, and annotated by Claude La Charité).

Other “Singuliers” to be published in October: Pierre Louÿs, Poésie érotique; Le Roi Arthur et la Table ronde. Récits du Moyen Âge; Olivier Saillard, Une histoire de la mode.

The author

The edition of Rabelais’ texts in the “Bouquins” collection was edited by Romain Menini, senior lecturer and recipient of the CNRS bronze medal in 2020, author of numerous works devoted to the author (including Rabelais altérateur, winner of the 2015 Georges-Dumézil prize from the Académie française). The texts of Pantagruel and Pantagrueline Prognostication were introduced, edited, translated, and annotated by Claude La Charité, Nicolas Le Cadet, and Myriam Marrache-Gouraud.

The edition

Bouquins is creating an event by launching a new collection in October designed to shed new light on its invaluable catalog: “Les Singuliers” is thus intended to feature the most original, rarest, or most astonishing texts from the catalog, in the form of paperback books of 300 to 400 pages, with elegant graphic design created by Philippe Apeloig.

Highlights

Pantagruel is on the curriculum for the classical and modern literature agrégation in 2026: the “Les Singuliers” edition will establish itself as an indispensable working tool (more practical and manageable than the large Tout Rabelais volume which runs over 2,000 pages; more complete and rigorous than all the pocket editions).
