Convinced that the narrator is the victim of a curse, her loved ones worry. To ward it off, they resort to superstitions and religious rituals passed down by the women of their lineage. Faced with the weight of traditions, her thirst for independence grows. It pushes her to embrace desires she had kept silent until then.

Torn between her desire for freedom and love for her family, she draws from their teachings to forge her own path. In an extraordinary linguistic blend and fragmented language, this novel examines with great humanity the question of multiple belongings and their consequences on identities.

The author

Born in Montreal, Anya Nousri is an author of Algerian origin. Highly acclaimed in Quebec, On m’a jeté l’œil is her first novel. It was a finalist for the Radio-Canada Caroline-Dawson Prize and won the Grand Prix de la ville Sherbrooke 2024.

Highlights

The furious and direct language of this debut novel recalls the verve of Virginie Despentes and the intimate tone, full of strangeness, of La Petite Dernière (Fatima Daas)

In a fragmented writing style that mixes 6 different languages, including Kabyle, Arabic, and French, Anya Nousri traces the story of a young woman who will defy social and family demands to assert herself in all her freedom
