“I do not want people to be very agreeable, as it saves me the trouble of liking them a great deal.”
—Jane Austen

Jane Austen, the most biting pen of 19th century England, deploys in her intimate correspondence – notably with her sister and nieces – her incomparable prose and regales us with the elegant insolence of her quiet irony. This little book distils, letter after letter, a concentrate of unequalled practical, social and literary intelligence, tracing a precise path of emancipation and artistic awareness.

The author

Jane Austen (1775-1817) is today’s most beloved British writer. Her great masterpieces, from Pride and Prejudice to Emma to Sense and Sensibilities, continue to delight readers of all generations. In her correspondence, she writes with the liveliness, sharpness and irony that are the hallmarks of her most famous novels. Of the thousands of letters she wrote, only about 160 are known to this day, her family having destroyed most of them.
