Something in our civilization has broken. This is no longer a matter of unease, or a battle between right and wrong, truth and falsehood, good and evil, the real and the digital. Something far deeper and long buried has exploded thanks to social media: hatred—our hatred. Violent, racist, misogynistic, homophobic messages flood our devices without end. And our lives. To the legitimate question, what can be done?, we point fingers at objects—this phone we call smart, these networks we call social. But if the object is at fault, is it really THE cause? Looking at the object without looking at ourselves is looking at the finger instead of the moon. “Madness is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results”, Einstein wrote. Are we ready to live differently?

Tania de Montaigne, novelist and essayist, delivers here a relentless analysis, but also a meditation full of talent, energy, and proposals. Against the prevailing morbidity, Tania de Montaigne sets forth a radical vitality.
