Grossir le ciel, a dazzling noir novel, has made Franck Bouysse one of the must-reads of contemporary French literature.

Gus has always lived in Les Doges, a hamlet lost in the heart of the Cévennes. He doesn’t really have a family anymore, except Abel and Mars. But who could reasonably say that a neighbor and a dog represent a real family? Just better than nothing. On this cold January morning Gus approaches Abel’s farm with his sixteen-caliber: he has spotted some venison. But as he is about to shoot, he hears a shot. Gus will later tell himself that he should never have lowered his eyes towards the farm, that he should have ignored this big spot in the snow. What happened at Abel’s house?
